1st field trip

Zadar hinterland and parts of Šibenik hinterland

Zadar hinterland is mostly rural area which can generally be identified with Ravni kotari region. Ravni kotari are of the largest and one of the most important agricultural areas of South Croatia. Throughout history, people living in this region were mostly engaged in agriculture (both cropping and pastoral activities), through which they achieved prosperity. In spite of extensive processes of depopulation and abandonment of cultivated land during the second half of the 20th century in this and other parts of coastal Croatia, the landscape of Zadar and Šibenik hinterland has retained the characteristics of an intensive agricultural region. This is not the case in all the municipalities we will pass on our field trip. Nowadays, there has been noticed development of different kind of rural tourism but not as intensively as it could be since natural features are favourable for development of those activities. During the field trip we will visit Benkovac area, including Asseria, famous ancient archeological site from preroman and Roman period near to Benkovac. In the route there are also Kistanje. After that, participants will visit one of the agrotourism settings. On the way back to Zadar they will also stop on the hill situated at the NE part of Vransko jezero lake, the site that offers a beautiful panorama of Zadar hinterland and Zadar islands. Vransko jezero lake is the largest lake in Croatia and it makes part of the Nature Park Vransko jezero.

Price of the field trip is 40 EUR. It includes bus trip to Zadar and Šibenik hinterland, entrance ticket for Nature Park Vransko jezero and lunch. Minimum number of the participants is 25.
